Engrossed in the conversation, Phillip didn’t realize Violet was struggling with belief and fear until she scrambled out of the picnic table and started walking backward away from the group. Nate’s command for her to stop hit Phillip hard, and he gasped. Jerking around to look at Violet, his jaw clenched at the fear in her eyes.

When her eyes grew larger and she stopped breathing, Phillip glanced around to see Jonathan shift into a wolf, quickly followed by Daryll shimmering into a bear, then Will shifting into a panther.

“Enough.” At Nate’s command, the three were animals shifted back into their human counterparts.

Phillip whipped around to face Violet. The petite red-head swayed, breathing hard and fast. With a moan, her eyes rolled up, and she fainted. Cursing, Phillip pulled his feet from under the table and jumped to catch her just before she hit the ground. As a human, Phillip wasn’t as strong as most of the men around him. Her slender form drove him to his knees, but he kept her head from hitting the edge of the shelter’s concrete slab. He surged to his feet, Violet’s dead weight causing the muscles in his arms to bulge with the strain, and he glared at Nate.

Anger smoldered through his chest, giving him courage, he otherwise would never have had. The muscles in his neck corded. “You didn’t have to tell her like that.” Unconcerned with Nate’s response to the anger he threw at the alpha, Phillip ignored Peyton when his dad hissed at him. Refusing to take his gaze from Nate to see what his dad wanted, Phillip glared at the alpha.

Nate’s eyes narrowed. He pursed his lips, hesitated, then nodded. He sighed as he dry-washed his face with both hands, then frowned at the girl Phillip held. “I suppose you’re right.”

Janelle unclipped the belt holding Ophelia in the highchair and handed her to Cynthia. She motioned for everyone to move their tea glasses off the table, then nodded at Phillip. “Put her on the table.”

All the were sitting at the table he and Violet were at moved out of the way, and Phillip carefully lifted one leg over the bench to get close enough to lay Violet on the table. Sliding his arm from under her knees first, he used both hands to gently let her head down. After brushing her red hair from her face, he stood and glared at Nate. “You just can’t treat a human that way, Nate!”

“That’s enough, Phillip.”

Realizing he effectively challenged the alpha, Phillip swallowed. A twinge rippled down his spine. Not knowing what else to do, Phillip bowed and tilted his head to the right, baring his neck the way he’d seen the were do when Nate was riled.
